JOB QUALIFICATIONS:

Required

  • Two years of successful undergraduate work;
  • Ability to relate to rural project participants from diverse backgrounds;
  • Maturity of judgment, strong sense of professional ethics, and responsibility;
  • Ability and desire to encourage and motivate students;
  • Ability to work productively with university professors and support personnel.

Preferred

  • Experience with teens or collegians in a tutorial role;
  • Knowledgeable of campus procedures and resources.

 

JOB SUMMARY:

The College Freshmen Mentor is a part-time position responsible to the Assistant Director for providing educational services to students so they make a successful transition into college.

 JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Serve as a support system to students as they transition from high school to college;
  • Maintain an appropriate professional relationship with students functioning as a tutor, motivator, and mentor;
  • Provide appropriate daily tutorial assistance in the form of test preparation, notetaking, time management, study techniques, assignment preparation, and motivational strategies;
  • Facilitate weekly meetings with students for the purpose of providing educational, personal, and/or career advising;
  • Interact with students within their living environment and remain accessible to them as needs arise;
  • Provide assistance to students as they register for fall classes and finalize financial aid;
  • Confer with professors of students a minimum of two times to assess student progress and ensure their success;
  • Maintain clear and accurate records including summative evaluations;
  • Refer to the supervisor those students not making satisfactory progress;
  • Safely transport students in University vehicles.
