JOB
QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Minimum of Master’s degree in counseling; Licensable by Sate of Missouri
  •  Professional experience in public schools, postsecondary institutions or agency settings
  • Prefer background similar to that of project participants
  • Ability to relate to low-income and first-generation populations from diverse racial and cultural backgrounds
  • Demonstrated ability to relate to the unique counseling needs of underrepresented teens
  • Demonstrated ability to assist counselees in behavioral change
  • Expertise in facilitating individual and small group activities
  • Knowledge of standardized testing procedures and familiarity with educational testing

JOB SUMMARY: 

The Upward Bound Program Counselor is responsible to the Project Director and Assistant Director for the development and delivery of counseling and testing services to project participants.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • To become acquainted with and accessible to program participants for the provision of counseling services
  • To provide personal, career, and academic counseling services on both an individual and small-group basis
  • To function as a referral base for the staff in dealing with counseling needs of students
  • To provide leadership and support to staff as needed in dealing with student matters
  • To function as a communication link, as appropriate, to administration for the continuation of support to students
  • To provide testing and maintain clear and accurate records for Upward Bound permanent files
  • To interpret test results to program participants for the purpose of identification of strength and need areas
  • To safely transport participants in University vehicles
  •  To provide appropriate input to staff at weekly faculty meetings
  • To provide supervision to counseling interns and assistance for the development and implementation of services
  • To complete student evaluations summarizing student needs; career and educational interests; and suggestions for future investigation
