SUMMER RESIDENTIAL MENTOR
JOB QUALIFICATIONS:
Required
- Two years of successful undergraduate work required;
- Experience working with teens and/or in fields related to project objectives;
- Ability to relate to rural project participants with diverse backgrounds;
- Ability to fill the multi-faceted roles of tutor, supervisor, support person, disciplinarian and mentor;
- Qualities of maturity, self-discipline, integrity, and cordiality;
- Capacity to assimilate facts, process viewpoints, and make quality decisions independent of supervision;
- Skills in communicating effectively and diplomatically;
- Capability to confront and deal with conflictive situations;
- Willingness to work long and unusual hours.
Preferred
- Ability to transport students in University vehicles.
JOB SUMMARY:
The Residential Mentor is a full‑time position responsible to the Hall Coordinator to provide tutorial and supervisory assistance to adolescents in a simulated college environment. Mentors live in the residence hall and are assigned students of like gender to mentor and supervise.
JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:
- To provide tutorial assistance in core academic areas, study habits, and study attitudes;
- To motivate, encourage and support students in various stages of adolescent development;
- To responsibly provide for the supervision, safety and security of students;
- To develop a professional relationship and function as a positive role model for college-bound students;
- To manage health problems and medical emergencies;
- To participate in and supervise co-curricular activities;
- To facilitate emotionally conflictive situations;
- To enforce program guidelines;
- To maintain accurate records of disciplinary actions and situations;
- To serve as a liaison between administration and students;
- To serve as a liaison between UB office and other University personnel;
- To safely transport students in University vehicles;
- To remain on call twenty-four-hours-a-day including designated weekends;
- To perform other duties as assigned.
