Variety Show Director
JOB QUALIFICATIONS:
Required
- Two years of successful postsecondary education;
- Interest and familiarity with theatre, dance, and music;
- Strong communication and organizational skills;
- Experience with Microsoft Office Word;
- Ability to create a cohesive and imaginative show involving 80+ students/staff.
Preferred
- Experience with technical theatre (operation of sound/lights and spotlights/microphones/curtains);
- Previous credits as a director/supervisor of theatrical-based productions.
JOB SUMMARY:
The Variety Show Director organizes and produces a theatrical evening involving skits, music, and dance. The production should involve all UB students and residence hall staff and is presented for family and friends of the program in a two-hour event. The Director must create a show that best displays the wide variety of talents of the program participants.
JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Meets with direct supervisor to discuss plan and expectations;
- Collaborates with the hall staff liaison to form the concept of the show and develop the process;
- Develops a positive working relationship with the auditorium staff and supervises all technical aspects of the show;
- Creates and maintains student interest and involvement;
- Holds auditions for and then decides upon the acts and the emcee(s);
- Meets with hall staff to discuss opportunities for full staff and student participation;
- Creates and disseminates a complete script, inclusive of all dialogue and technical cues;
- Crafts all musical elements of the show;
- Establishes a clear line of communication between supervisor, hall staff, faculty, tech crew, and students so everyone remains aware of the commitments and the rehearsal process;
- Monitors content of the show, keeping in mind that it is presented to families and those outside the program;
- Procures and orients judges for the show;
- Maintains the integrity and professionalism of the show and the rehearsal process.
