Truman State University’s Upward Bound Project (UB) provides selected high school students with effective preparation for college applications, enrollment, and success. UB participants benefit from mentoring by college students, tutoring in core subjects, help with college/career exploration, and guidance through the college admission and financial aid application processes.

What Help Does UB Provide?

  • Individualized assistance in weekly after school at area target schools
  • Advising on high school course selection for effective preparation for college
  • Help developing time management and organizational skills, as well as improving note-taking and test-taking skills
  • Exploration of career goals, relevant majors, and potential colleges/universities
  • Assistance with college selection, application, and financial aid
  • Connection to positive college role models and other college-bound peers
  • Experience living on and navigating a college environment as part of an on-campus Summer college preparatory academy

Qualifications for Upward Bound

  • Be a high school sophomore when applying
  • Have college potential but need additional support to be prepared and

                                                               Either

  • Qualify by meeting family income guidelines established by the U.S. Department of Education

                                                              And/Or

  • Be a potential first-generation college student (neither natural or adoptive parent living in the home has a four-year degree)

There are over 900 Upward Bound programs in the United States

85% of UB participants go directly to college after high school graduation. UB participants graduate from college at over 4 times the rate of similar students who did not receive UB services.

All services are provided at NO COST to participants and their families.
