ACADEMIC COACH/TUTOR
JOB QUALIFICATIONS:
- Two years of successful undergraduate work required
- Work experience in fields related to project objectives
- Prefer background similar to that of project participants
- Ability to relate to low-income and first-generation populations from diverse racial and cultural backgrounds
- Demonstrated success as a college student, along with ability to tutor in academic and study skills areas
- Demonstrated maturity, dependability and thoroughness
- Knowledge of academic area(s) and required study skills for participant success
- Public relations skills for a variety of publics
- Demonstrated ability to maintain documentation of services provided
JOB SUMMARY: The academic coach/tutor is a renewable semester long part‑time position, responsible to the Assistant Director for the delivery of tutorial/support services to project participants in area target schools.
JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Direct Services
- Travel to and provide tutorial support services to participants in area target schools
- Implement trouble‑shooting strategies for the enhancement of participant academic success
- Provide academic and career informational sessions and academic advisement
- Maintain appropriate records of tutorial and advising services
- Assist participants in ACT preparation, securing college admission and financial aid for institutions of participant’s choice
- Public Relations
- Function as liaison between Upward Bound and the publics it serves—i.e., University, community and area school districts
- Confer, as needed, with parents, teachers, counselors and administrators in an effort to define and meet participant needs
- Maintain cooperative, ongoing relationships with parents and target school personnel
- Assure the responsible utilization of University and area school resources—i.e., travel procedures, vehicle usage and maintenance of facilities provided by target schools
